Thought for the day

"Menticide is an old crime against the human mind and spirit but systematized anew. It is an organized system of psychological intervention and judicial perversion through which a [ruling class] can imprint [their] own opportunistic thoughts upon the minds of those [they] plan to use and destroy." -- Joost Meerloo, The Rape of the Mind

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will lead the Russian delegation to the UN General Assembly (UNGA), scheduled for the end of September in New York, the Kremlin announced on Monday.

The Kremlin confirmed on Monday that President Vladimir Putin neither intends to travel to the UNGA nor address the event online. Instead, the Russian president signed a directive designating Lavrov as the head of the Russian delegation.

Due to sanctions, it's unclear whether the US will allow Lavrov to enter the country, even for the global event.

He will be accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin and Russian permanent representative to the UN Vassily Nebenzia, as well as Senator Grigory Karasin and Duma deputy Leonid Slutsky, who chair the foreign affairs committees of their respective parliamentary chambers.

The US government sanctioned Slutsky in March 2014, over his support for Crimea rejoining Russia. Lavrov was added to the sanctions list on February 25, as Washington accused him of being “directly responsible for Russia’s unprovoked and unlawful further invasion” of Ukraine. Russia has dismissed the embargo by the US and its allies as unilateral and illegitimate.

According to a new report from The Federalist, Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney’s husband is a partner at the same law firm representing “scandal-ridden” Hunter Biden.

This news about Cheney’s husband, Philip Perry, first broke last week when the Daily Mail “reached out to Hunter Biden’s attorney for comment on a story.” The outlet later received a response from an attorney named Christopher Clark.

As you can see in the tweet thread above, Clark called reporter Josh Boswell a “parasite” in his email response. Then the partner at the firm Latham & Watkins accused Boswell of living off other people’s difficulties.

Notably, this is the same law firm Perry is a partner at per the company website.

“These are dark times for our Nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents. Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before.” Trump said in a statement.

Update (2053ET): Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) came out with a blistering response to the Monday FBI raid on former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence, reportedly in connection with materials Trump brought with him after leaving office.

"The raid of MAL is another escalation in the weaponization of federal agencies against the Regime’s political opponents, while people like Hunter Biden get treated with kid gloves," said DeSantis. "Now the Regime is getting another 87k IRS agents to wield against its adversaries? Banana Republic."

Are 55 and older workers propping up the U.S. economy? The data is rather persuasive that the answer is yes.

The chart of U.S. employment ages 25 to 54 years of age and 55 and older reveals a startling change.

There are now 20 million more 55+ employed than there were in 2000, an equivalent of the entire workforce of Spain. This unprecedented demographic / employment transition is worth a closer look.

As the second chart shows, some of this increase is due to the rising population of Americans over 55 years of age--an increase of 42 million. In 2000, 30% of those 55 and older were employed. Today, over 37% are employed--a significant increase in the percentage of 55+ people who are working.

Apple has notified suppliers that anything shipped from Taiwan needs to have a "Made in China" label in order to strictly comply with Chinese customs regulations, following a controversial visit to the island, Nikkei Asia reports.

The regulation, which has been in effect for a while, has not been enforced. It requires shipments from Taiwan to reflect its status as part of the People's Republic of China.

According to the report, Apple urged suppliers to take the matter seriously to avoid any delays due to goods being withheld by customs.

As Insider Paper notes, Apple's decision has already been criticized for the company's failure to allow suppliers who view Taiwan as an independent country to "opt out" of putting a 'Made in China' label on their goods.

President Joe Biden on Monday reacted to China's military announcing it is extending drills surrounding Taiwan. The four days of live fire exercises, which Taiwan sees as a direct threat and has described as effectively a "blockade", were scheduled to end Sunday, but the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theatre Command announced Monday that it is "continuing joint training under real war conditions, focused on organizing joint anti-submarine warfare and naval strikes."

In the fresh remarks, Biden said in what was a surprise to many that he's "not worried" about Chinese aggression toward Taiwan at this moment. "I’m not worried, but I’m concerned that they’re moving as much as they are. But I don’t think they’re going to do anything more," Biden told a group of reporters before traveling to Kentucky.

Ray Dalio’s take on US-China tensions over Taiwan contains some alarming warnings.

While the founder of the world’s largest hedge fund wrote that an all-out war is still considered “improbable,” a gauge he uses to track the conflict between the two countries has surged to a record and is comparable to previous major wars. He warned that the tit-for-tat escalation could easily get out of control, as has often happened in history.

As far as markets are concerned, the fallout from US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan appears to be more noise than signal. But for Bridgewater Associates’s Dalio, the “fourth Taiwan Straits crisis” is not something to be taken lightly, and the situation is “very similar” to the environment immediately prior to the two world wars.

That’s the message from his gauge of US-China conflict, which is composed of indicators such as changes in military spending and the views of people in each country toward the other, according to an essay published Monday. The current reading is nearly 1.2 standard deviations above average, in the high end of the range of major conflicts.

“This is the summer before the storm. Make no mistake, with energy prices set to rise to unprecedented highs, we are approaching one of the biggest geopolitical earthquake in decades. The ensuing convulsions are likely to be of a far greater order of magnitude than those that followed the 2008 financial crash, which sparked protests culminating in the Occupy Movement and the Arab Spring …

“Carnage has already arrived in the developing world, with power outages from Cuba to South Africa. Sri Lanka is just one of a cascade of low-income countries where leaders face being driven out of power in an ignominious blaze of petrol droughts and loan defaults.

“But the West is not going to escape this Armageddon. In fact, in many ways, it looks set to be its epicentre – and Britain, its Ground Zero. In Europe and America, a technocratic élite system built on mythology and complacency is crumbling. Its founding fable – which prophesied the nation states’ glorious enmeshment in world government and supply chains – has metastasised into a parable of the perils of globalisation.

A nurse from Texas was charged Monday with six counts of murder in a fiery crash at a Windsor Hills intersection that left six dead, including a pregnant woman and her baby, Los Angeles County prosecutors said.

Nicole Lorraine Linton, a 37-year-old registered nurse from Houston, also faces five counts of vehicular manslaughter in Thursday's crash and fire. She faces up to 90 years to life in prison.

Linton was released from Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center over the weekend and is now being held on $9 million bail at the Century Regional Detention Center, according to jail records. Her bail was initially set at $2 million and it is unclear why it was raised.

It was not immediately clear whether she had an attorney who could comment.

Ukraine’s state oil pipeline operator Ukrtransnafta has stopped pumping Russian crude through the southern branch of the Druzhba system to the EU, RIA Novosti news agency reported on Monday, citing Russia’s Transneft.

According to the report, transit supplies have been halted to Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Igor Demin, spokesperson for the president of Transneft, told the agency that transit through Belarus in the direction of Poland and Germany continues.

Demin explained that Russia cannot make payments for transit due to EU sanctions, although the Ukrainian company is insisting on 100% prepayment for its oil transportation services.

“When making a payment for transit through the territory of Ukraine, the funds were returned to the account of Transneft,” he said, adding, “Gazprombank, which services payments, notified us that the payment was returned in accordance with the EU regulations, that is, the seventh package of sanctions.”

Webmaster addition: So, Zalensky is blackmailing Europe using Russia's oil!

One of the many adverse events linked to Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) "vaccines" is reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, which can manifest as herpes, chickenpox, autoimmune blisters, and monkeypox. In fact, monkeypox is often indistinguishable from chickenpox, which, when it manifests in adults is called shingles. A 1988 study on monkeypox explains that "the main clinical diagnostic problem is the differentiation of human monkeypox from chickenpox." In other words, what some people are now experiencing that the media is calling monkeypox could actually be chickenpox or shingles, depending on the person's age. And the cause could be Fauci Flu shots, which just so happen to have been introduced under Operation Warp Speed right before the new alleged monkeypox outbreak. According to the government and the media, monkeypox, aka pridepox, seems to be spreading primarily within the LGBT community. However, the true ground zero could actually be Pfizer's mRNA (messenger RNA) COVID injections, which were widely received by LGBTs. "The chickenpox virus is technically known as the varicella-zoster virus, and just like its close relative the herpes simplex virus, it becomes a lifelong resident in the body," explains Exposé News. "And like its other cousin, genital herpes, varicella may be silent for many years, hiding out inside nerve cells and can reactivate later, wreaking havoc in the form of the excruciating skin disorder, shingles, which is a blistering, burning skin rash." "Unfortunately, or fortunately; depending on whether you chose to get the COVID-19 injection, official Government data and confidential Pfizer documents strongly suggest the COVID-19 injection may be reactivating the dormant chickenpox virus or herpes virus due to the frightening damage it does to the immune system."

Christie writes that Trump randomly brought up Wray's job performance while Christie was at the White House helping the president prepare for his first debate with Joe Biden in September 2020.

"Do you want to know who the worst member of my administration is?" Trump asked Christie, according to the book, "Republican Rescue." "Your guy. Your guy Chris Wray. He's the worst."

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) reacted to the FBI’s shock raid of former President Donald Trump’s Florida home, Mar-A-Lago, on Monday, proclaiming that “until Joe Biden denies it, a President just raided a former President – his political opponent.”

“Let that sink in,” Massie added. “There are only three branches of government. The FBI is works [sic] for the current President.”

“Is AG Garland bitter that Trump kept him from becoming a Supreme Court justice? Is that why, according to news reports, he raided Trump?” the congressman added in a follow-up tweet.

Trump also reacted to the FBI raid, writing, “These are dark times for our Nation, as my beautiful home, Mar- A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents.”

“Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before,” the 45th president added.

Meanwhile, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has promised to launch a full-throated investigation into Attorney General Merrick Garland and the FBI’s raid on Trump’s home.

“I’ve seen enough,” McCarthy said. “The Department of Justice has reached an intolerable state of weaponized politicization.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said he, like everyone else, is going to “wait and see” whether former President Donald Trump is going to run in 2024, before making his own decision about a possible bid for the White House.

Everyone is going to wait and see what Donald Trump decides and make decisions from there,” Cruz told Fox News on Aug. 5 at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Dallas, Texas.

“I am grateful for his leadership,” Cruz continued. “He’s going to decide what he wants to do. And frankly, he’s going to decide on his own timeframe.”

“He’s going to decide when he damn well wants to, and the rest of the world will react accordingly,” Cruz added.

In 2016, Trump garnered 1,441 delegates in state primaries and caucuses, before being officially nominated as the Republican presidential candidate. Cruz finished second with 551 delegates.

Pelosi

During that time, “we witnessed gun crime with assault weapons drop by up to 40 percent,” Pelosi said on the House floor during the recent debate.

The number of murders with rifles actually increased slightly when the ban went into effect,” John R Lott Jr., the president of Crime Research, told The Epoch Times, referring to data from the FBI’s annual release of reports from law enforcement agencies on homicides by weapon type. Lott also pointed out that no one collects data on all crimes committed with so-called assault weapons.

The term “assault weapon” is a political phrase referring to semi-automatic rifles with various cosmetic features. The House bill calls an “assault weapon” a rifle that has one feature such as a pistol grip, folding stock, or grenade launcher.

While Pelosi makes it sound like there’s a grave risk of being killed by a rifle, it’s actually a rare crimeLott has reported that the percentage of firearm murders with any type of rifles was 4.8 percent prior to the ban starting in September 1994. During the 10-year ban, homicide by rifle was 4.9 percent of all murdersThen rifle homicides dropped to 3.6 percent after the ban expired in 2004.

The US will participate in war games with the Indian military in an area of India that is less than 62 miles away from the country’s disputed border with China, known as the Line of Actual Control (LAN).

The drills will be held from October 18-31 and will be the eighteenth iteration of annual exercises between the two militaries known as Yudh Abhyas, which is Hindi for "war practice." They will be held in the Auli area of the Indian state of Uttarakhand in the Himalayas mountain range.

The Yudh Abhyas drills are meant to train for fighting in high altitudes. The last iteration of the exercises was held in the mountains of Alaska in October 2021.

Tensions have been high between India and China in the Himalayas since June 2020, when clashes in the Galwan Valley killed 20 Indian troops and four Chinese soldiers. Since then, China and India have been engaged in talks to reduce tensions, but they have also reinforced their militaries along the LAN.

The US has been increasing military ties with India in recent years with hopes of using New Delhi as a counter to Beijing. After the Galwan Valley clashes, the US and India signed a new military pact, known as the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA).

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s "surprise" trip to Taiwan last week should be "Exhibit A" as to why interventionism is dangerous, deadly, and dumb. Though she claimed her visit won some sort of victory for democracy over autocracy, the stopover achieved nothing of the sort. It was a pointless gesture that brought us closer to military conflict with zero benefits.

As Col. Doug Macgregor said of Pelosi’s trip on a recent episode of Tucker Carlson Tonight, "statesmanship involves advancing American interests at the least cost to the American people. None of that is in play here... Posturing is not statesmanship."

PLA pilot patrolling near Taiwan on Sunday: Xinhua via AP

Pelosi’s trip was no outlier. Such counterproductive posturing is much celebrated by both parties in Washington. Neoconservative Senators Bob Menendez and Lindsey Graham were thrilled with Pelosi’s stop in Taipei and used it as a springboard to push for new legislation that would essentially declare war on China by declaring Taiwan a "major non-NATO ally."

The "one China" policy that, while perhaps not perfect, has kept the peace for more than 40 years is to be scrapped and replaced with one sure to provoke a war. Who benefits?

Foolishly taking the US to the brink of war with Russia over Ukraine is evidently not enough for Washington’s bipartisan warmongering class. Risking a nuclear war on two fronts, with both Russia and China, is apparently the only way for Washington to show the rest of the world it’s serious.

In what's looking to be endless weapons transfers to Ukraine, the US Defense Department on Monday unveiled yet another $1 billion in additional security assistance to the Ukrainian military.

Acting Pentagon spokesman Todd Breasseale in a press briefing described it as "the single largest package using the president's drawdown authority, including munitions for long-range weapons and armored medical transport vehicles..."

AFP via Getty Images

That's right, it just won't end...

"The package adds to about $8.8 billion in aid the United States has given Ukraine since Russia's invasion on Feb. 24," Reuters reports. "It includes munitions for HIMARS, NASAMS surface-to-air missile system ammunition and as many as 50 M113 armored medical transports."

For those trying to tally the math of where this puts all defense monies committed to Ukraine thus far, the DoD statement includes the following

In total, the United States has now committed approximately $9.8 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the beginning of the Biden Administration. Since 2014, the United States has committed more than $11.8 billion in security assistance to Ukraine.

Cuba struggled for a fourth day Monday to contain a massive blaze at a fuel depot in the northern part of the country. The depot supplies the largest power plant in the communist country -- there are no indications yet if crude supplies to the thermoelectric plant have been disrupted.

Cuban Army helicopters circled the Matanzas industrial complex on Monday, dumping water on the blaze with specialized buckets, though efforts to contain the blaze appear to have failed as a third tank caught fire.

Another wave of turbulence rocked the US airline industry as hundreds of cancellations and thousands of delays made air travel an utter nightmare on Sunday.

The flight-tracking website FlightAware reported 950 flight cancellations and more than 7,700 delays across, into, and out of the US on Sunday.

Chicago O'Hare International Airport recorded the most cancellations and delays yesterday, with 12% of all flights canceled and over 40% of flights delayed. The reason for air travel disruption was heavy rain across the Chicago metro area.

After doing everything in their power to help Joe Biden win the 2020 election - including the yellowest of journalism to downplay the NY Post's credible report on Hunter Biden's evidence-filled laptop - CNN appears to have gone against their child-sniffing commander-in-chief.

During a Sunday segment of CNN's "Reliable Sources," host Brian Stelter admitted that the Hunter Biden laptop story is not "just a right-wing media story," and that it could impact Joe Biden's chances for reelection in 2024.

"What about his son?" asked Stelter. "What about Hunter? Hunter under federal investigation, charges can be coming at any time, this is not just a right-wing media story. This is a real problem for the Bidens."

Americans are tired, at odds with themselves and in no shape to handle more foreign entanglements — much less the three-front catastrophe looming before us. Yet here we are, with the U.S. potentially facing a drawn-out war in Ukraine that risks escalating into a direct U.S.-Russia confrontation, the collapse of the Iran nuclear deal that may lead to war with the Persian Gulf power and now an unnecessary crisis with Beijing over Taiwan, triggered by Nancy Pelosi’s ill-advised trip to Taipei.

Ultimately, this trifecta of crises further de-prioritizes the real existential threat of our era.

Ultimately, this trifecta of crises further de-prioritizes the real existential threat of our era: climate chaos. But that’s another story. For now, the Biden administration still has the opportunity to prevent one of these potential crises: the Iran nuclear conflict.

There is neither victory nor even a certain outcome in sight in Ukraine in the short to medium term. The U.S. and its allies, as well as the Russians, are preparing for a prolonged conflict. Stamina and commitment will determine the outcome of that war. Yet, as MIT professor Barry Posen writes, even after more resources are poured into the war, the most likely outcome will still be “a long, bloody, and ultimately indecisive war.”
