Guatemala was forced into another volcanic emergency as Fuego erupted with towering lava fountains, pyroclastic flows and massive ash clouds, sending families fleeing through the night. On August 3 and 4, authorities raised the alert level, evacuated vulnerable communities and closed a major highway as one of Central America's most active volcanoes intensified. Volunteer firefighters carried out door-to-door evacuations while residents described watching glowing lava descend the mountain after dark. Fuego, located about 35 kilometres from Guatemala City, devastated nearby communities during its deadly 2018 eruption, making the latest activity especially alarming for those living on its slopes. This video explains what triggered the evacuations, the latest official warnings and why the volcano remains one of the region's greatest natural threats.
